There's a number of practices I do each week - practices that help ground me, connect me to my Self and to something higher and simply, enhance my happiness.
Dance is one of these practices. (Oil pulling, which I shared with you last week, is another. You can read my article on oil pulling here).
Just like yoga, dance helps me shift and transform my energy (my physical energy and my energetic field more broadly).
Once a week, you'll find me dancing in my room, in front of the mirror, to a tune I love. It's a practice I've been dedicated to for a long time now, and one that has transformed my life.
There's many benefits of dance that are well written about. Here's some of the benefits I've personally experienced:
It has strengthened my physical body.
Reduced my stress and improved my mood.
Gotten me out of my head and away from my pesky thoughts, back into my body and heart (which is the birthplace of intuition and creativity!)
Improved my self esteem and confidence and helped me fall in love with my physical body.
I know many women who feel intimidated to dance because they're not 'good' at it. Because they can't move their hips like Beyonce, or work the dance floor like Rhianna (I mean, can anyone though?!) I understand and can relate to this intimidation and resistance honey, but know that there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to do this movement practice. There is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to swing your hips, shake your booty or move your arms. This practice is not about looking 'good' but rather, tuning in to how your body wants and needs to move and moving it without judgement.
Remember - no-one is watching. Only you! Keeping this in mind helped me a lot when I first started this practice!
I used to think that I had to make drastic changes in my life in order to find the happiness I desired.
What I now understand is that this is not the case at all. Instead of big and drastic changes, true and lasting happiness comes from daily practices (such as dance) that are done consistently over a long period of time. Practices that have become a part of my everyday life. I've seen the magic of this unfold in so many practices that I hold dear to my heart - yoga, dance and meditation, just to name a few.
If you're someone who is active in seeking peace and happiness in her life then I urge you to give this movement practice a go. Start small and aim for one song a week for one month. Choose a tune you adore and simply, let go. Shut down your eyes, tune in to the music and begin to move your body in a way that feels authentic for you.
On some days, your movement may be fast, hard and energetic.
On other days, your movement may be gentle, sensual and feminine.
Remember, there is no 'right' or 'wrong'.
I'd love to know how you go with this movement practice or, if you're experiencing any resistance, I'd love to work through it with you. Leave me a message in the comments below!
